Squirrels and chipmunks will eat red or green tomatoes. It is usually because they are thirsty. If you leave a bowl of water near the tomatoes this should stop them from eating them. Other animals that like tomatoes are deer and bears. If you have a problem with either of these, unfortunately not even a scarecrow usually will work.

The usual suspects who often "snack" on tomatoes are birds, rabbits, deer, rodents (such as squirrels and field rats), oppossum, raccoons (possibly), skunks, chipmunks, bears, and even some dogs and cats. You often hear about some little critters who also like them such as caterpillars, tomato fruitworms, hornworms, sowbugs, slugs, and snails.
