The song came first but it doesn't have very much to do with the plot, beyond expressing pride in the characters' home state. The movie features a love triangle involving a poor but ambitious Southern boy, the girl who leaves to make her mark in NYC and a rich guy.

Yes, the song came first, but the movie and song are only related in that they are both about the South. The movie is more of a sweet romantic comedy about a relationship between Josh Lucas and Reese Witherspoon. It also about a Southern woman going back to her roots and honoring their influences on her life.
