Early Christians, who were mostly Jewish, met in synogogues. After being expelled by traditional Jews, they congregated in homes of believers, a practice that would last for centuries. When the Roman emperor Constantine legalized Christianity, real churches, buildings dedicated to the worship of Christ, could finally be built.

The first Christian churches were founded in Rome and outlying areas by people who had been Jewish and were not considered Roman citizens. Eventually Rome became a Christian city, but not until long after the church had been created.
