Should exposed brick ever be painted?

Yes, you can paint them. Some people actually paint exposed brick white or another non offensive color and they really do look quite sharp. A lot of people do this in places that there are bricks exposed in the bathroom or somewhere that actual brick doesn't fit in very well.

Painting exposed brick is a personal choice and doesn't have a yes or no answer. You can use a room wall paint and if you want the brick to look antiqued just go over it with a glaze.

Brick is porous, so once it's painted, there's no removing the paint. Unless you're sure you will never want a natural brick again, exposed brick should not be painted.

We have exposed brick in the kitchen, it is the chimney. I have treated it but have left it natural. It's your preference.
