These are light tan spots which are brown in colour. The presence of several cafe au lait spots suggests a genetic disorder that causes abnormal cell growth of nerve tissues.
It doesn't cause ailment, having multiple spots is linked with neurofibromatosis type I and rare McCune-Albright syndrome. Spots of 5 mm diameter before puberty are its cardinal diagnostic features.
