My mom was received royalties from oil wells in Texas when she passed away in 1009. What happened to them when she died? Where is the money?

It seems like the proceeds would have gone to us kids.

Who is getting the money depends on who she named in her will to receive it. Her will ought to give this clue. In most states, just because you are related does not automatically mean you will get property when someone dies.

The first thing to do is to contact a attorney. Secondly, if your mother left a will, carefully review the details and make note of any reference to the oil wells. Lastly, contact the administrator or company that handled paying the royalty fees and find out what legal documentation is needed for you to begin receiving these payments.

If the money was deposited to her checking account or savings account, that money should have been distributed to her estate per her will. Future oil royalties go to the person who now owns the land for which the mineral rights are assigned. If the land was sold, the oil royalties go to the new owner.

It depends on what she said in her will. If she had a will you will need to speak with her lawyer and with the executor of the will. The lawyer and executor will be able to tell you where that money is currently going and if you should be getting it.
