If your car starts that means that the engine works. If the car will not move forward then that means your drive train is not working. The most obvious thing to check would be your transmission. It sounds like your transmission clutch plates are worn out and need replacing. Either that or your missing a drive shaft.

There are several possibilities. When you put it in gear do you feel it engage? If not then it's the transmission, if yes it could be the u joint or the rear axial could have failed. Check your transmission fluid while the car is running and warm. It may be as simple as adding fluid.

To the questionier, I took several minutes rolling your question around in my head. Unfortunatly I'm not mechanically inclined and would probably send you on a goose hunt. Here are a few reasons why your car is having problems based on my own personal experience, your transmission could be stuck or there could be something wrong with your CV joints.+

First thing to do is to make sure the parking brake is not stuck on. If you have had recent problems with the transmission it might have finally let go. It sounds like the drive train is in a bind. Have a mechanic take a look at it.

it sounds like your missing first gear in the transmission if it revved up then pulled its more than likely a dirst transmission filter but once the pan comes off you can learn a little bit more if theres gold ish flakes in the pan thats a sign of transmission failure hope this helps
