Unfortunately nothing is special about Ford's of the late 90's apart from some ABS related issues. The company had to recall a few Explorers to fix the issue. Otherwise, there are not any serious issues reported in general. Ford's had a fair reputation for reliability in that period.

No, there is nothing unique about it other than the gears it has. Also, they didn't really do anything different in comparison to the fords that are out now. Thus, there is not much of a difference. If you want to gain some information on the gears, you can search this on google.
