There are currently no medications specifically approved for the treatment of self-cutting or other types of self-injury. There are medications that can address the underlying causes of the behavior, such as depression, anxiety, or other mental issues. A qualified physician can examine the patient and determine what medications, if any might be appropriate.

Like cold medicine which merely reduces the severity of the cold symptoms rather than cure the illnes, perscribing psychiatric medicine for cutting might only work to cover up the behaviour to a certain extent, leaving the underlying cause of the cutting intact.

Medication is a challenge for people who cut themselves. Borderline personality is often the personality disorder seen in this type of self abuse. This condition may be relieved paritally.

A medication that may be helpful for people that cut is an anti-depressant, but they will also need therapy to help identify the underlying causes and triggers for cutting. The medication can help alleviate some of the sadness but they will also need to learn how to change their behaviors.
