Is the CEO of a company appointed from inside or is it a job that they just hire somebody for?

CEO's typically report to the Board of Directors. While some Boards may hire a CEO, often they climb through the ranks learning all aspects of the business.

Usually they are appointed from internal people and the person appointed is and internal person usually some one of high ranking. I have never heard of a company going out and hiring someone off the street for that job they have to really no what they are doing without mistakes.
