Teflon is dangerous because it contains perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA) which is harmful and has been tested to have caused cancer and birth defects on lab animals. PFOA known as C- 8, is certified as a carcinogen. Although Teflon is used as an insulator and has many applications it is dangerous especially when heated over 700 degrees Fahrenheit.

Teflon-coated cookware can emit fumes of a gas called PTFE if heated to over 500 degrees Fahrenheit. A number of studies indicate that this gas can be emitted in volumes lethal to pet birds. A number of advocacy sites intimate that there may be danger to humans, but scant scientific evidence of this can be found.

When used properly and under the correct condition then it is totally safe. Never use any utensil to scratch the surface and never use it with very high heat. That way there will be none flaking off and no harmful fumes being released.
