Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands consists the territory that United States own in the Caribbean area. The eastern edge of Puerto Rico is 75 miles west of the western edge of St. Thomas; therefore St. Thomas is not really part of the island chain of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is fairly large - about 100+ miles end to end and almost 50 miles wide. St Thomas, in the Virgin Island, is only a few miles across. It's about 50 miles from the eastern edge of Puerto Rico; too far for a small boat, but fairly close by air.

St. Thomas is one of the US Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands are approximately 30 miles east from the main island of Puerto Rico. One of the smaller islands belong to Puerto Rico, Isla de Culebra is less than 12 miles from St. Thomas.

Both are in the Caribbean and actually are quite close, about 100 miles as the crow flies. St. Thomas is to the east of Puerto Rico.
