Is it too late to start gymnastics at age 15?

Answer by  DougThomas (74)

The answer very much depends on the objectives of the student. If one intends to be an Olympic quality gymnast then age 15 is far too late to begin. However, if the goal is to make the Varsity Cheer Squad during your senior year in high school, there are competitive advantages to be acquired by starting gymnastics at 15.

It is never too late to participate in a sport you love. Having said that, there are certain motor skills and movements requiring flexibility that become more difficult to learn and execute with advancing age. Most professional gymnasts start well before age 15.

It is not too late, but it will be more difficult than if you were younger. After the age of 10 your body starts tightening up. The older you get the more aware you are of that 4 inch beam surface that you are working on or that you are flipping through the air.

It is never too late. However, it will be late to compete as a gymnast since you will not be as flexible, and the age limit tends to be 20.

It depends what your goals are. To be successful than yes. At that age, many women take gymnastics very seriously and are being spotted by colleges.
