Is it safe to give a toddler Benadryl to help him sleep?

My son is not sick, but he won't go to bed. Can I give him Benadryl to make him drowsy?

This is what my Ped told me...Yes! If needed to get a child back on a healthy sleep schedule. Should not be used more than three days in a row! Give only the amount recomended by your doc.

Benadryl is not approved for children under two years of age. Also, in young children, it often has the opposite effect than on older ones--it makes them more hyper.

This is a very bad idea on many levels, one being - some small children have a reverse reaction to benadryl and they will be awake for hours or even all night. And why would you take the risk of having a child depend on a chemical to induce sleep? Very bad idea indeed.

No. If he will not go to bed and is a toddler. Change his schedule. Make nap time shorter or earlier. Is the child active enough during the day. Benadryl can also make kids hyper. So you may make it worse. Evaluate the schedule and if nothing works call the DR.

I took my son to the Dr cause while we were sleep training him he stayed awake for 23 hours straight on only 4 hours of sleep. I didnt know what else to do and wanted to rule out any illness or teething. He said to give Benadryl 1tsp

My doctor recommended it for my toddler, it worked well. He was not sleeping and he was miserable ans so were we. It helped him get on a schedule. My pediatrician said it was deemed safe for lots and lots of years. I did it 3 nights.
