Severe pain after a failed root canal is typical because the nerve is still intact. To eliminate the pain, the root canal should be performed again. If the pain continues,, it may mean that the patient has an infected abscess or a crack in an adjacent tooth.

Pain in the tooth after months of root canal treatment can be due to new bacterial infection which is due to the defective closure of the gap. Infection can be minimal or serious with severe tooth damage and abscess formation. Endodontic surgery may be required in serious cases. Other causes might be defective or incomplete treatment.

If it is something you cannot live with, and you have tried all possible corrective courses of action recommended by your doctor, you should consider having the tooth completely removed.

Having pain that long after any surgery could likely mean that a nerve was nicked or something else happened during the surgery to cause nerve damage. Most likely nerve damage will eventually heal, but it may take years and isn't always a guarantee. Consult with a DIFFERENT oral surgeon.

Yes, this is bad. You need to see a dentist, perhaps even one other than the one who did the root canal. The pain can indicate an infection or bone damage.
