Is it appropriate to debate the pros and cons of abortion in a middle school classroom?

Are they mature enough to handle it?

I don't think that the majority of middle school students are ready for a debate on abortion. They don't have enough life experience to understand the real ramifications of pregnancy or termination. Most students of that age are too immature to talk about sex responsibly, and that needs to be covered before an abortion debate.

While many of the children are probably knowledgeable enough, there are probably a few that haven't had the proper teachings at home due to whatever reason. It's certainly a good idea, but I would not go ahead with it until you have notified all the parents and send out permission slips. Okay it with the school too, unfortunately.

This is not an acceptable debate topic without parental permission. This is because abortion debates lead to both religious discussion and sexuality, since sex is what causes the pregnancy and religious belief is one of the reasons against abortion.
