This really depends on what the soap is made out of and what you mean by "better for you." Handmade soap usually does not contain as much chemicals as store-bought soaps. But that also might mean it may not clean better. You just need to read and research the ingredients.

Handmade soap cleans as well as purchased soaps. It is not necessarily better for you than purchased soap but you have more control over ingredients. Commercially produced soaps are often made with animal based products while handmade soaps can be made using vegetable based products.
