Mezcal, similar to Tequila, is the only brand to be associated with the "worm". The worm is the larva of a maripose worm, which feeds on the agave plant.

Don Julio tequila does not have a worm inside it. In fact, "tequilas" that have worms are not considered to be "tequila" by the Mexican government. The best tequilas do not have worms, adding a worm is more of a tourist-attraction thing.

Different brands of what is usually called "tequila" may have the worm at the bottom. The worm is employed in mezacal, which is a lower grade of tequila. It does not confer a special taste to the drink. Its really just a publicity gimmick.

In actuality tequila which is used in many drinks including the popular margarita, does not have a worm in the bottle. Worms can be found in a liquor similar to tequila called mezcal. This beverage is made from the maguey plant, which is similar to agave. Mezcal is also stronger than your typical tequila.
