Phase 1 treatment also known as Interceptive treatment is done when the permanent molars erupt. So it is appropriate to start treatment for a child of 6 year old. the aim is intercept at an early age and prevent severe orthodontic problems like crossbite, deep bite, crowding ans skeletal changes. Intercepting helps in stabilising future orthodontic treatment.

No,the ideal age to start phase 1 treatment is around 7 years of age. Phase 1 or Interceptive Treatment normally starts when the child has most of the milk teeth and a few permanent front incisors. The aim of Phase 1 Treatment is to intercept a orthodontic problem in the early years as skeletal growth problems, crossbites and crowding and eliminate it.
