Children of alcoholic parents have a higher risk. Also, personality characteristics, which are partly inherited, is a factor. A person who is anxious or craves excitement can be prone to alcoholism. Also, having an unhappy childhood can factor in. A persons environment can be a cause - if you are around people who constantly drink or you crave attention.

Yes alcoholism does run in families and is hereditary. It is not the alcoholism that is passed down through your genes but an addictive personality. Be very careful about drinking and other addictive activities such as gambling, smoking and using recreational drugs. If you feel that you are having trouble with an addiction get help right away.
