Genetically speaking people who live in Ireland are no more prone to alcoholism than any other people. What is possible is that the culture, ie the Irish social acceptance/predilection for drinking, may cause more individuals in that country to take it up, and who would otherwise not become alcoholics, to do so.

Alcoholism has been theorized to be genetic, so it follows that an initial batch of alcoholics would translate into an exponential number of future alcoholics. However, a more likely answer is that culture would cause more heavy drinkers. Ireland is not filled with the 12-step programs of Alcoholics Anonymous, and drinking isn't seen as a sin there.

No, not at all. Irish people are known for their drinking habits because of their environment and social habits (if you've ever been to Ireland, there are pubs at every corner of every street! ). It is true that the Irish love their alcohol, but there is nothing about being Irish which would make them prone to being an alcoholic.

I can't see why not. If you had to wake up every day and remember that you're Irish you would drink also.

That may be, but what's your excuse. Another thing you don't know is not to anger an Irishman, let along one with a few drunks in him.  add a comment
