A rectifier converts AC/Alternating-Current (from your alternator) into DC/Direct-Current,
Rectifiers are often built-into the alternator-body;
A (voltage)regulator attempts to maintain a constant-voltage-level
or at least limit it to not exceed a given-voltage (like 12VDC).
Both rectifiers and (voltage)regulators drop the voltage,
so alternator/rectified-voltages are higher than regulated/system-voltages.
