Video game walkthroughs are helpful. They are used by players who encounter a problem they cannot solve and cannot complete the game, by players who wish to 'fully' complete a game, etc. They are also used in place of game guides as they are often more up to date.

It depends on the video game. Some games, such as casual party games (Viva Pinata, Rock Band, etc.) can be easily played without a walk through. Other games have very large worlds (Lost Odyssey, Dragon Age) and a walk through can be helpful if you get stuck. It also depends if you want to figure stuff out for yourself.
