Many children are found to have heart murmurs and most of them have normal hearts. Heart murmurs in children are often caused by some congenital abnormality which, in time, may heal. Your doctor will likely send you to a specialist who can evaluate the condition and give you more definitive information. If you are concerned, you can request this evaluation.

Heart murmurs can range from being serious to being outgrown or to not causing serious problems and can be left alone. Serious murmurs may require extensive care, while some may simply go away on their own or not be so serious that they will cause serious complications.

Newborns can have a heart murmur due to a septal defect (a hole in the wall between the left and the right halves of the heart) that will sometimes close on its own as natural hormone levels change and stimulate the closure. Before birth this hole is a normal thing as it permits oxygen from the mother to circulate.

Heart murmurs in children are often harmless and symptomatic of a growing child, but they need to be evaluated by a physician to assure that the heart is functioning properly.
