I was just informed that my four-year old has "abnormal lymphocytes." What does that mean? Any thoughts????

Lymphocyte is a white blood cell, and WBCs fight invading bacteria, viruses, etc. It depends what "abnormal" means. Abnormal amount? Abnormal maturity? A high white blood cell count can occur with any infection (from a common cold, to a MRSA infection). Too many band cells (or immature white blood cells) can indicate problems with the bone marrow's production, or cancer.

You should ask these questions of the person who gave you the news. It is not about "any thoughts????" There is a long list of reasons for abnormal lymphocytes. Rather than allow yourself to be alarmed by uninformed non-medical opinions from the Peanut Gallery, consult with your child's physician.

My daughter had this when she had a really bad ear and sinus infection. I think its when the lymphnodes are swollen due to infection. We had her adenoids removed and she felt better. She wasn't sick after this surgery ever again, not one infection. Her neck was a bit swollen when the lymphnodes were inflamed.
