It is better to practise some breathing exercises so that your respiratory capacity increases. Some techniques of yoga like pranayama can also be practised.

Make sure you have used medications the Doctor has prescribed, such as a rescue inhaler. Taking a very deep breath and blowing it out as fast, as hard and as long as you can during the test should help raise your level. Practice this type of breathing before you take the test.

One can improve ones spirometer reading in not possible. A spirometer can be used to measure the volume of breath a person can expire but it is impossible to expire your entire lung capacity. This is due to the "dead space" capacity that remains to stop the collapse of the alveoli.

Regular deep breathing exercises can strengthen your chest muscles and can improve spirometery readings. Inflating ballons can improve spirometry. Mouth breathing can also be done.
