Many companies sell trees that are eight to ten inches in height. When transplanting, be sure to dig a large enough root ball to include most of the root material from the tree. Also, make sure to plant no deeper than it was growing before and tamp the dirt around the tree.

Anywhere from 6 inches to 2 feet is a good height to transplant pine saplings. The most important thing is to dig up enough of the roots so that the transplant will survive. The taller the tree to be transplanted, the bigger the root ball needed.
