In order to get an epidural you must be well into labor. Most doctors like to perform the epidural after the mother is about four centimeters dialated. Other doctors may base their decision on the amount of pain that you are feeling.

You can get an epidural at any point in labor. The only disadvantage of an epidural is that it slows down labor.

A woman is usually at least 4 centimeters dilated before being administered an epidural because it can cause a slowdown in contractions.
