Over-the-counter-flea products are expensive and ineffective. Your dog should get a monthly flea treatment to spare him and your home from fleas from any source. Since your dog is small, the cost is minimal and you will not be wasting your money. Talk to your veterinarian to get your dog on a program immediately.

They're very safe. Products like Advantage have been on the market and tested for years. Just make sure you get the right dose for your dog's weight and apply once a month.

Most over the counter flea treatments do not harm the dog at all. Though, you get what you pay for in terms of how good the products are.

Some over the counter flea products for dogs are completely safe. However, some flea products are associated with health problems. A product like Frontline or Sentinel is considered safe and effective, and is available at most pet stores or online. If you are worried, consult your vet about a particular product before using on your dog.
