Cystitis is comparatively rare in men. Women are particularly susceptible to cystitis because of
the short length of the female urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. Men are not
as vulnerable to developing cystitis as women because the long male urethra protects against a bacterial invasion. Men who have an enlarged prostate gland also are more susceptile.
