Use at least 1/4 of an inch of topsoil to cover grass seed. Protect any grass seeds in your yard from birds, until the seeds have sprouted and established themselves.
A few inches (approximately 6) would be ideal, however, there are some different varieties of grass that will grow in poorer quality soil, just like some varieities thrive in shade versus sun.
