Since one square foot is 12 inches wide and 12 inches long, there are 12 inches X 12 inches = 144 square inches in one square foot.

In 1 foot there are 12 inches. So what you do is that you square the ratio of 1 foot is to 12 inches and you get 1 square foot is equal to 144 square inches.
