Small breeds have small litters, usually, and larger breeds have larger litters, usually. There is no hard and fast rule. It is not uncommon for Labrador Retrievers to have 12 or 13 puppies, while a Maltese or Yorkie might have just one or two.

The number of puppies in a litter varies by dog breed & size. The average size of a litter is six although a Mastiff (larger breed) has given birth to 24 pup's at once.

I have heard of some dogs having as few as one or two and others that have 20 puppies in a single litter. It really is a bundle of surprises when a dog is pregnant. Though average number is 5 to 6 puppies in a litter.
