Technically, communism is no longer in effect in China. After the fall of the soviet union in the 1990s they began transitioning into government run capitalism. You can now own property in China. They became communist in 1950/1951.

The Chinese Civil War lasted from 1926 to 1949. In 1949, the Communists took over all of mainland China while the nationalist (non-Communist) government fled to Taiwan, where it made Taiwan its own country. China began allowing some capitalism under Deng Xiaoping in 1980 to encourage production and economic growth.
