The body's cells start to die rapidly when the body is deprived of oxygen. Depending on where the body is left, decomposition may take longer. A body may shortly be filled with maggots where the climate is warmer. By one month, the body should be liquefied, but bones remain.

The time it takes for a body to decay varies from incident to incident. A body that is frozen will take longer where as a body that is in a desert will take a shorter amount of time. Different tissues decompose at different rates. The first to go is the lining of the trachea. Skeletal tissue is the last.

It depends on a number of things such as how the person died. Obese people decompose usually quicker than a normal weight person. It also depends on the type of dirt and the casket.
