How long do microwaves last?

Our Panasonic counter top was built in 11/87. Therefore 24 years old! The door release button has been broken for over 2 years and ALWAYS gets stuck, but a tweek pops it back in place and it works just fine. Time to get an over the range.

My experience with microwaves - over 40 years - has shown that their longevity is probably best tied to how often the door is opened and shut.

Products are only as good as its manufacturer. The last microwave I had for five years. There was faulty wiring in the apartment I was living in and a surge through the wall blew out that one. The one I have now has lasted four years and its still going strong. Quality is key, not price.

It depends how good have you taken care of it, and how many times you've used it. If you don't take good and proper care of your appliance, it's life span will be shortened . Same goes for the frequency usage - more usage, more wear and tear.

My GE microwave lasted about 17 years. We had a power outage one and fried it, other wise I'd probably still have it.

The truth is, I have never had a microwave oven stop working. Usually they end up going to goodwill or being left to a roommate before they actually die. This makes me think they last easily 10 years or so, though the older ones are probably pretty energy inefficient.

A typical microwave should last about 10 years. However, I had one that was given to me as a wedding present and it lasted for 15 years.

+0 They used to be so much better than they are now. I first one lasted several years but in the last several years we have gone thru one almost every year or so. Like everything else, they are disposable now.

look at consumer reports (the consumer reviews) - every single one of them died after 2 years (mine did too - panasonic)
