A patient on dialysis treatment generally does not have a good long-term prognosis. At least half of patients on dialysis die after 10 years, but whether that is directly related to dialysis is not completely certain. It also depends on why the patient was put on dialysis and how well a patient adheres to treatment and self-maintenance.

It depends on your overall health. Some people live fairly well taking dialysis. It actually depends on what condition has put you on the treatment to start with. The progression of whatever disease you have will tell the tale.

A lot of patients live for years on dialysis. It depends on the patient's overall health and what other serious diseases they may have. Remember that medical science and treatments are improving everyday.

People who live for a very long time on dialysis behave differently. The longer the treatment itself (for example, overnight treatment) the better the outcome. The first year is the worst because people have to change their lifestyles. People who have lived their first year have much better expectations.
