How long can an egg sit out?

I left an egg on my counter by accident, I don't know if it's still okay to eat it.

I keep my eggs in bowl on the counter. I cook and bake a lot, and eggs usually need to be room temperature for best results. I probably use them within a week. My mom always had a bowl of eggs out on the counter, and we all survived nicely.

You can test the freshness of an egg by putting it in a bowl of cold water with some salt dissolved in it. If the egg sinks to the bottom of the bowl then it is safe to eat. If it floats then the egg is bad and should be thrown away.

A general rule is one hour out is 24 hours in the refrigerator. The health department would recommend not leaving eggs our more than 2-3 hours like meat. However, eggs will last a day or two before going bad. It will impact their expiration date. A bad egg will be obvious and taste bad.
