Glass is made by melting sand at extremely high temperatures. The molten glass is then either blown by hand into different shapes, or it can be blown by machines into bottles or other items. The quality of the glass depends on the quality of the sand. Different colors are achieved by adding impurities, such as copper to create green glass.

Glass is made by the fusing of particles of silica (silicon dioxide). Sodium Carbonate is added sometimes to reduce the melting point of the silica. The combination of these two chemicals forms a eutetic mixture. Usually sand is used because of its natural abundance of silica.

Sand, soda ash (sodium carbonate), and lime stone are put together and heated to very high temperatures to make a liquid. When the liquid cools and hardens, it is glass.
