Bridge pins hold the guitar strings in the bridge. The ball end of the string is inserted into the wooden bridge hole, and the pin is inserted on top. There is a trough, or slot along the pin that the string sits in allowing the pin to be flush and tight around its circumference. The pressure holds the string in.

The bridge pin goes through the bridge of an acoustic guitar along with the ball-end of the string, and anchors the string to the body of the guitar. When changing strings, you slacken a string, remove the white pin, and put the new string back through along with the pin.
