Some schools put more weight on standardized tests than others, but if you are applying to a top tier school than you have to have the best of everrything.

For schools like Harvard, SAT score is very important, but not as important as standing out in the crowd. Assuming you meet their minimum SAT requirement, work on your student activities and your essay to show them you're a unique person that deserves to be admitted.

SAT scores are only a part of the admission process. They also look at your grades and class standing, your essay for admittance, activities you are involved in, both in the community and at school. Most colleges will give an acceptable range of SAT scores.

SAT scores are very important to college admissions, but it is not the only thing that matters. Check to see what the average SAT scores were for the students currently attending the colleges you're interested in. Your goal should be to at least meet this number. Schools also pay close attention to your grades and extracurricular activities.
