How far in should I hammer a nail?

I am not very good at working with tools.

That depends on what you are building. If you are buildning a wall or a deck, for instance. you want the nail to be flush with the wood. If you are making a piece of furniture, you want to set the nail into the wood so it can be covered.

If you would like to learn about how to do more Home improvement, Home Depot offers weekend clinics. Hammer the nail so it's head is flush with the board.

It depends on what you are working on. You should hammer most nails in flush. If you are planning on covering a nail, you'd want to nail it in a bit more so you can put wood putty over it.

Hammer the nail all the way in. Unless you are wanting to remove the nail later. If removing the nail later I would recommended leaving enough room for either the claw of your hammer or a cat's paw.
