There are five types of taste receptors called taste buds on the tongue that respond to one of the basic tastes - sweetness,bitterness,sourness,saltiness or umami.Various combinations give all taste sensations.

The tounge of a human being has a soem sensory organs named taste buds. These are also called Gustatory calycil and are concentrated or located on the upper surface part of the tounge. The major categories of tastes are saltiness, bitterness, sweetness and sourness.
