Solar panels are photovoltaic surfaces which produce current when are hit by lights photons. A square meter of such surface can generate over 1kW of power on a bright sunny day (enough to power 10 old style or 50 power conserving light bulbs).
Solar panels work like batteries, they soak up energy from the sun and then funnel that energy to whatever it is connected to. Solar panels will definitely help the earth.
