It works by taking the curls out of your hair by use of a chemical just like you use a chemical in a perm to add curl.

Chemical hair straightening temporary changes the chemical balance in your hair, much the same way that perming your hair does. It's sort of a reprogramming of your hair to change the texture.

Chemical hair straightening works much like perming or body waving does. It forces your hair follicles to straighten and stay straight for usually up to 3 months or so. It's great if you have a natural curl and want straight hair for awhile without having to use a straightener every day.

They apply a relaxer to the hair which breaks down the chemical bonds of the hair. It is combed through and once combed straight, is neutralized to maintain the straightened style. Caution: relaxing does not cause hair to be perfectly straight, just loosens any curls. Additional styling made be required.

At a salon, a stylist will apply a chemical solution all over your hair, and you sit under a dryer for about an hour. Then it stays straight!

It's exactly the same as having hair permed, only it keeps your hair straight! it may start to lose effectiveness after a while and needs redoing as your hair grows.

All straightening breaks the keratin bond that causes hair to curl. This can be temporary, usually done at home, or more long lasting, by a professional. The latest "fad" is ionic straightening. Regardless, it can be VERY damaging, so I recommend consulting a GOOD professional who knows curly hair and will maintain a healty long-term process for you.
