I have seen one installed on a Chevy Blazer and it worked well. It's basically an extension to your intake that keeps it above 4-5 feet of water.

A snorkel is used to raise the air intake point of the truck above stock. This prevents water and debris from getting into and killing the engine.

A snorkel lets the engine draw air from a location higher then stock. This means that the vehicle can go in deeper water without letting it in the intake.

The snorkel attaches to the hood of the truck so the water cannot go up the exhaust and stall the truck out and if they have a snorkel on them when you are in water as long as the snorkel is out of the water the truck will start.

It works pretty much the same as a snorkel used for scuba diving. It extend the factory air intake from under the hood up to a higher level. This makes it almost impossible for the engine to suck water in and die. However if you plan on crossing deep water you need to waterproof the rest of the engine.
