Smart cards are used for identification purposes and by far the biggest drawcard is that they are resistant to tampering. Smart cards can be used to store digital certificates for web browsing, or hold encryption keys to be able to access external storage. You could take your storage with you, but you ALSO need your smartcard to access it.

A smart card can allow you to log into your system by swiping card instead of a password. If your laptop has a smart card reader or a fingerprint reader you can set up these features. Normally the PC manufacturer will include software that allows you to configure the security settings.
