Are parakeets really smart birds?

I have an African Grey and a Umbrella Cockatoo. They use word/phrases approipately and manipulate my family into doing things the way they want it done. I have seen the cockatoo beg for food from us and turn around and feed it to the dog! You be the judge.

They may not be the smartest bird, but they are very smart. They can be taught to talk, and can have a very large vocabulary. They can learn how to open/close the door to their cage, and can be taught to communicate what they want, and taught to sing.
