The pick up coil sits at the base of the distributor. As the camshaft spins the distributor shaft a magnetic gear passes by the coil, it "trips" the coil to activate the ignition coil. The ignition coil sends a spark to the rotor which will be lined up with a post on the cap going to the spark plug.

The coil works by gathering energy to create a spark and then releasing it to the spark plug when the firing of the cylinders happens.
