Install generator output to isolation switch generator input. The isolation switch is installed between incoming commercial power and power panel. Insure the voltage legs are phased correctly to the incoming commercial power feed. The neutral is connected and the gen set is mechanically grounded.

When wiring an emergency generator always use a transfer switch, and correct wire size. Run contol wire and power wire in seperate conduit. Use local wiring codes.

Wiring an emergency generator is not something for a novice. You can either buy a transfer switch; or wire a four prong 220v 40 amp extention cord to a 40 amp double pole breaker, in your breaker panel. You can then switch off your main power and switch on the generator breaker in an emergency.

Emergency generator has to be wired with a transfer switch which have three-position handle, and there will be a mark as"on- off-on" or "line-off-gen".

It is best, and likely required in many locations, to hire a certified electrician to wire your generator to you home.
